With my own eyes I saw an albatross fly, twice
Like a kite it soared up CDO's skies. Lost, no doubt.
Stubborn bird weathered the storm till blue skies
reigned over the chaos that was born
"Great sea bird that glides with ships upon bitter deep"
Though I only knew of the bird by reputation
(from Baudelaire, Coleridge, Floyd, and Bad Religion)
To me the albatross is a good omen,
To others it's a vulture, "a bane to all men".
It reminds me of the bird hanging round my neck
In my naïvety I saw it as it is,
just another long-winged, stout-bodied bird
And for being naïve, I shot it down
with stabbing glances and cutting remarks
And now I wear this alabatross, like an amulet
and it burns like a scarlet letter against my chest
Regret, constantly irks me of its deathly reek
and is quite a pain in the neck, so to speak.
But I digress ...
I tell you, to exact Vengeance is pointless,
for the bird is not just another metaphor
It represents hope, or maybe, just a bit more
It calls for us to repent, but to do just that
would only warrant the flight of the albatross

Is there any
Greater disgrace for a poet than to
Extend his meaning beyond anything
That he ever could possibly say?
